Test Description & Methodologies

Potency Testing via HPLC

Our High Performance Liquid Chromatography test provides the most accurate and in depth cannabinoid profile available for your strains. It is important to use HPLC over gas chromatography (GC) for cannabinoid testing. GC testing will convert all acidic compounds (THCA, CBDA, etc.) to their neutral form, reducing the number of cannabinoids you can test for and giving an inaccurate representation of your strain’s cannabinoid content. Our HPLC test provides a profile of 14 different cannabinoids: Δ⁹-THC, Δ⁹-THCA, Δ⁸-THC, THCV, THCVA, CBD, CBDA, CBDVA, CBDV, CBG, CBGA, CBC, CBCA, and CBN.

Microbial Testing via Real-Time PCR

Any agricultural product has the potential to be infected with microbes, even if grown indoors. Some of these organisms can be very dangerous and cause illness or disease in people who ingest or inhale the product. Dangerous pathogens such as Salmonella, E. Coli, and Aspergillus fungus can pose a threat to cannabis consumers. It is important to perform microbial testing on all cannabis products before they are put on market shelves to catch these dangerous microbes before they make someone sick. These microbes can be introduced at any stage of production, so it is important to test cannabis derived products once they have reached their final production stage. Our quantitative real-time PCR tests will allow you to determine if your products are harboring any of these microbes.

Residual Pesticide Analysis via LC-MS/MS

Pesticides are substances used during crop growth to kill or ward off insects and microorganisms that are harmful to the plant or to humans that will ingest the plant. While they are highly effective in getting rid of unwanted plant pests, pesticides can also pose a threat to the health of consumers. Pesticides can cause varying adverse side effects if ingested or inhaled. PB Laboratories can identify and quantify trace amounts of pesticide residues using liquid chromatography (LC-MS/MS). We offer a compliance panel of some of the most common and concerning chemicals. Including: Abamectin, Acequinocyl, Bifenazate, Bifenthrin, Etoxazole, Imazalil, Imidacloprid, Myclobutanil, Paclobutrazol, Piperonyl butoxide, Pyrethrins (cumulative total of 6), Spinosyn A, D (cumulative total of 2), Spiromesifen, Spirotetramat and Trifloxystrobin.

Residual Solvent Analysis via GCMS

Solvents are volatile organic chemicals that are commonly used in cannabinoid and terpene extraction processes. These solvents are removed from the extract through a purging process. This purging process removes any remaining solvents leftover from the extraction process through heating and pressurization. However, this does not always remove all of these harmful solvents, thus we perform residual solvent testing to confirm that there are no harmful chemicals left over before the product is sold to the consumer. PB Laboratories tests for 23 solvents, including: Acetone, Benzene, Ethanol, Ethylbenzene, Heptane, Hexane, Isopropanol, Methanol, Pentane, Toluene, m-Xylene, o-Xylene, p-Xylene, Butane, Propane, Isobutane.

Terpene Testing via GCMS

Terpenes are volatile aromatic hydrocarbons that can be found in the essential oils of many plants, and they tend to have very strong and distinct scents. Plants evolved the ability to produce terpenes to either attract pollinators, respond to stress, communicate with neighboring plants, or to ward off pests and predators. The terpene profile of cannabis strains can vary widely. At PB Laboratories, our added terpene panel tests for 39 different terpenes that can be present in cannabis. Terpene profiling has become a hot topic in the cannabis community and consumers now expect information on the terpene profile of the strain they buy. The terpene profile is a huge selling point for cannabis producers and is a worthwhile test to perform on new and old strains alike. With a panel of 39 terpenes, PB Laboratories offers the most in depth and detailed terpene profile for cannabis in New Mexico.

Hops Latent Viroid Test

Hops latent viroid (HLVd) is becoming a major issue for cannabis growers. A plant infected with HLVd can become stunted, have altered branching, and have significantly reduced flower and THC yield. It is suspected that over 30% of cannabis plants in the United States are infected with HLVd, and over 90% in California. Our quantitative real-time PCR test will allow you to test your cannabis plants for HLVd so you can quickly identify and isolate the plants in question. We are currently the only laboratory in the state of New Mexico that offers this service.
